Dear Friends,

September ushers in a flurry of activity. Suddenly I am confronted with the realization that summer has faded along with the rhythmic hum of the cicada. I will miss the soothing drone of the insect; yet, it is soon replaced by the emergence and increased chatter of familiar faces who gather to participate in Sunday school, biblical studies, choir and mission projects. Persons can be seen coming and going not only on Sunday, but during the week as well.

I must say I welcome the increased noise and activity, observing as members and friends come together utilizing their spiritual gifts in a variety of ways. Each person reflecting the diversity of talents we all possess. It serves as a reminder of Paul’s description of the church being the body of Christ. Many parts actively working together to further God’s work in the world.

If you happen to stop in sometime, you will observe people who display gifts of hospitality and of caring for others.

Persons, who sing, sew, build, repair, organize, lead and teach. There are many hands actively at work and being used to help others, each performing a variety of skills that allow the church and its mission to function smoothly.

As I observe the work of others, I am reminded of the manner in which God has gifted each one of us and provides guidance and help as we use our talents to further God’s work in the world. Paul would call this work our “spiritual worship,” meaning the manner in which we participate and acknowledge God’s work not just on Sunday, but acknowledging God’s presence everyday in our daily lives.

Paul’s message is a call for each one of us to think about the ways we engage in “spiritual worship.” To consider the manner in which we can learn and understand God’s transformative work that goes on within us as we use our gifts and talents to help others.

What type of worship will you engage in this fall? What will that look like for you? Will it mean participating in biblical study, attending Sunday school, working on a specific mission project or starting a new one?

As we move into the activity of fall let us also discern the best manner in which to use our gifts and talents as members of the body of Christ.

Peace,

Pastor Glenna

Your recollections of events and activities of the church would be appreciated.  Jot them down on paper and drop them in the basket next to the kitchen.  The committee's initial plans are for several celebrations to be held during our anniversary year of 2009 and to publish a booklet with articles and photos on the church's past and present activities.
