Dear Friends,

Last month we began our annual Stewardship campaign. The campaign will conclude with the presentation of our Pledge Cards during Consecration Sunday on November 9th.

If you have been in attendance during worship these past few weeks, you have heard fellow members of this congregation share their thoughts on Christian Stewardship. I find their witness to be inspirational as well as a reminder of the truth found in scripture.

Jesus calls us to be his disciples. If we say we are called to be a disciple of Jesus Christ then we are proclaiming that everything we do is rooted in our saying “Yes, to Jesus.” Part of saying yes, means that we will be Christian Stewards of all that has been given to us. In other words, we are now recognizing that everything is a gift from God and our responsibility rests in the manner we manage the gifts we have received.

God is the true owner of all that we have in life. Jesus consistently taught that our responsibility as a disciple is to recognize that God is the provider; and, our call as a follower is to be generous givers of our resources. This includes our prayers, talents, service, as well as finances.

Discipleship calls us to excel in the grace of giving. Discipleship finds joy in the giving of our resources for work in the church and the world. Why give to the church? The church works to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. By supporting the church, you are supporting this ministry.

As you consider your giving for the coming year, may you respond with a willing and joyful spirit that is centered upon your response to God’s goodness in your life.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Glenna

To the congregation:

I wish to express my continued appreciation for the out pouring of love

and generosity you have extended to me as your Pastor.  Thank you for

the gift card to Family Christian Stores in honor of  Pastor Appreciation Month. Blessings to you all as we continue together in ministry.

Love,

Pastor Glenna

 Hope Notes

Please keep bringing your aluminum cans to church.  See Linda Hess with questions.

The church office is always in need of used ink cartridges.  The office supply stores have changed their policies and now accept only name-brand (Dell, HP, and Epson) cartridges.  These cartridges can be redeemed at office supply stores for paper and other supplies we need to run our office.  Please leave used cartridges in Roberta’s mailbox.

Volunteers are needed to clean our church.  Please continue to sign up on the Volunteer Schedule which is in the Housekeeping mailbox.  The job description is also available in the mailbox.  Call Linda Hess for more information.  Volunteers are also needed to mow the lawn.  The sign-up clipboard is located below the housekeeping board.

The Joliet Cluster continues to support the Ridgewood United Community Pantry, an outreach ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church, located in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Joliet.    In November, we will be gathering puddings and cake mixes.  Please place them in the blue bin in the narthex, and many thanks for your assistance.

The United Methodist Men will have a Quilt drawing on March 7, 2009, the day of our Corned Beef Dinner. Tickets are on sale now for the drawing.  See Linda or Roger Hess to buy one ticket for $1.00, or six tickets for $5.00.   The proceeds will be designated for current expenses. The quilt is hanging at the back of the sanctuary.

Our Annual Church Conference with Aurora District Superintendent Rev. Diana Facemyer will take place on Sunday, November 30, at 4:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.  All members and friends of Hope United Methodist Church are invited and encouraged to attend.  Reports for the Annual Report should be submitted to Roberta by Monday, November 17, at 9:00 a.m.

All-Church Outing - We are going to have an all church outing to see "You Can't Take it With You" on Sunday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m.  We will meet at the church at 1:30 for car pooling.  Cost is $10, $9 for seniors and students.  (If 10 people attend we will receive a group rate.  The sign-up sheet is in the narthex.  See Pastor Glenna if you have questions.

Church Women United will hold their World Community Day Celebration on Friday, November 7, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 1508 Arthur Avenue, Joliet, at 10:00 a.m.  The speaker will be Rosetta Flowers, who was formerly involved in prison ministry.  She will speak on the topic, “God’s Wisdom Sets Us Free.”  Lunch will be at noon.  Please bring non-perishable items for the Spanish Community Center.

Forty additional copies of “The Faith We Sing” hymnal was purchased recently with funds from the Keefer Blackwell memorial.  Now there are sufficient copies for use in our worship services.

Be sure to pick up your copy of November/December edition of The Upper Room.  Regular and large-print copies are on the credenza in the narthex.

There will be a Halloween party for our children on Friday, October 31, from 7-9:30 p.m.  This is on Halloween day and is scheduled to follow trick-or-treating.  So keep your costumes on and come to the church for even more fun!
