Dear Friends,
Summer
is upon us, and we waited a long time for its arrival. With summer comes a
change in our normal church activities. The Choir, Bag Ladies, Faithlink Adult
Sunday school and UMM will suspend until September.
But
- this does not mean that ALL activities at Hope UMC will be on hiatus. Our
church will continue to be active. The first event will be held on June 8 with
the return of Rev. Fred Conger followed by an all - church Potluck after the
service. The Yard Sale will be another part of our summer events held on June
14, A Father’s Day recognition on June 15 during worship, followed by Vacation
Bible School the week of June 16-20. Many persons have volunteered to help and
we look forward to these fun filled weeks.
While
summer may bring a change in routine; it doesn’t mean we stop worshiping.
Services will continue at 9:30 with special music provided each week by
talented members and friends; likewise, the children will have learning
opportunities as well. Children’s Sunday school will continue to be offered
throughout the summer months. Darlene is planning curriculum to keep our
children coming to church as they learn about God and their place in the world.
My
wish is that as we enjoy the summer months of fun and relaxation, we do so in
the way proclaimed by our mission statement, gathering together each week as…”a diverse community of believers in Jesus
Christ, who worship, work, and play together; committed to growing and sharing
in our knowledge of the Bible and spreading God’s love by reaching out to the
needs of people.”
I
look forward to seeing you!
Blessings,
Pastor
Glenna

Summer Sermon Series
A four part sermon series based on the “Wesleyan
Quadrilateral” takes place in July.
The Wesleyan Quadrilateral is a methodology for
theological reflection that is credited to John Wesley, founder of The United
Methodist Church. “Wesley believed that the living core of the Christian faith
was revealed in Scripture, illumed by tradition, vivified in personal experience,
and confirmed by reason.” (The Book of
Discipline of the United Methodist Church-2004. p. 77).
Each week will be complete on its own; attendance
throughout the sermon series will enhance the experience.
The series begins July 7 and will be completed on
July 28.

Our 50th Anniversary
Calling all persons who are
willing to begin planning our church’s 50th anniversary
celebration. Jesse Walker Methodist
church was chartered in June, 1959. Many
changes have happened since that time: A permanent structure was built. The
Hope Notes
Please keep
bringing your aluminum cans to
church. We have collected a little over $100.00. It is going for
the Christmas stockings and for Easter for Boomer's kids and also for
supplies for the Bag Ladies.
The United Methodist Women are looking for Bakers for their Bake Sale that will be held during the All-Church Yard Sale on June 14. Please see Harriet Luce if you can help.
The church office is always in need of used ink cartridges. The office supply stores have changed their policies and now accept only name-brand (Dell, HP, and Epson) cartridges. These cartridges can be redeemed at office supply stores for paper and other supplies we need to run our office. Please leave used cartridges in Roberta’s mailbox.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 8. Former Interim Pastor Rev. Fred H. Conger will be back with us for the day. As well as bringing us a sermon in his inimitable style, Fred and his wife Carol will join us for a pot-luck meal after worship. So bring something delicious and be prepared for a special day as we welcome Fred and Carol back into our church.
Subs Needed: We are in need of Nursery Substitutes
on June 8 and 15. See Pastor
Glenna if you can help.
We are missing
two of our folding chair in Fellowship Hall. If you know where they are
please let a trustee member know.
Yard Sale June 14: Start cleaning out your basements, crawl
spaces, attics and garages for the church yard sale. What may have lost its luster for you will
surely become someone else's prized possession!
Come and shop, stay for lunch.
But, most of all join in the fun as we work together to support the
ongoing ministries at Hope Church.
Rides To Church: We would like to establish a listing of
persons who are willing to give some of our members who no longer drive a ride
to church. If you can offer your
assistance, please leave your name in the church office. We will then give your name to the
individuals who are in need of this ministry.
The Education Commission would like to announce that Vacation Bible School will be held June 16-20, 9 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. Our theme this year is “Beach Party - Surfin’ through the Scriptures.” Be sure to register your children soon! Registration forms are on the credenza in the narthex. The cost is $10.00 per child. Please return completed forms with payment to Pastor Glenna as soon as possible.
A Big Thank you to Sue Wietlispach for planting the “Holy Spirit” in front of the church. The geraniums that were donated for Pentecost will be seen each time we come to worship and will serve as a reminder of Pentecost throughout the summer.
Also - thanks to all hands who helped on workday. The weather cooperated and a good time was had by all. We were visited by baby rabbits that came out to cheer us on! Though- upon further inspection they have since relocated to quieter surroundings. Those who participated completed the majority of tasks on the workday list. A few remain and are posted on the bulletin board in the rear of the sanctuary.
The Northern Illinois Annual Conference will be held at Pheasant Run Resort, June 5-7. Rev. Glenna Olumstad and Lay Representative Pat Michalik will represent Hope UMC. All persons are welcome at anytime to observe the proceedings. For more information log onto www.umcnic.org
Summer Special Music Needed – See Cheryl Foster to sign up.
The Bag Ladies will meet for the last time before the summer break on Thursday, May 29. We will resume our work in the fall.
