Dear Friends,

Summer appears to be passing quickly. I hope you have found opportunities to utilize these months to engage in activities you enjoy. Some of you have taken trips to visit family and friends; others have found time to go to ballgames, summer concerts and theatre productions. I am looking forward to a few days of quality time with extended family as I pursue one my favorite hobbies of genealogy. I enjoy visiting the small towns, church buildings and cemeteries of my ancestors as I continue to incorporate persons into my family tree. History and tradition help to shape the persons we have become.

Just a few weeks ago we launched “The 50th Anniversary Committee” in order to celebrate our church history. We will be honoring 50 years of faithful Christian service provided by those who have gone before and to celebrate our current ongoing ministries. As we come together to honor the past, we understand our roots as a faith community and incorporate that knowledge as we continue to shape our future mission.

While 2009 appears far off, it will arrive sooner than we expect. Please pay attention to further announcements from the committee as they seek materials, photos and other memorabilia from years gone by. Everyone is asked to contribute ideas and information.

As we do this, I want for us to give serious thought as to what our goals will be for the next 50 years.

We are an active, revived and growing congregation. I thank you for your faithful attendance through these busy days of summer. Our commitment to worship and service points to a committed future.

Enjoy these last few weeks of hazy, lazy days and be ready for fall activities as Choir, Adult Sunday school, bible studies and other events begin once again.

Blessings,

Pastor Glenna

50th Anniversary Committee Begins Work

June of 2009 is a milestone year for Hope United Methodist Church.  In June of 1959 our church was chartered as Jesse Walker United Methodist Church, later to become Hope United Methodist Church.

The 50th Anniversary Committee had its first meeting on August 14th.  Many wonderful and exciting ideas were discussed by the newly - formed committee.  We are planning a full year of events to

celebrate our 50 Years strong as a congregation.

If anyone has photos, drawings, booklets or any other documents and memorabilia that they would like to loan the congregation for our celebratory year, please contact any committee member.  Also see a committee member is you would like to participate on the committee.

Hope Notes

Please keep bringing your aluminum cans to church.  See Linda Hess with questions.

The church office is always in need of used ink cartridges.  The office supply stores have changed their policies and now accept only name-brand (Dell, HP, and Epson) cartridges.  These cartridges can be redeemed at office supply stores for paper and other supplies we need to run our office.  Please leave used cartridges in Roberta’s mailbox.

Volunteers are needed to clean our church.  Please continue to sign up on the Volunteer Schedule which is in the Housekeeping mailbox.  The job description is also available in the mailbox.  Call Linda Hess for more information.  Volunteers are also needed to mow the lawn.  The sign-up clipboard is located below the housekeeping board.

Rides To Church:  We would like to establish a listing of persons who are willing to give some of our members who no longer drive a ride to church.  If you can offer your assistance, please leave your name in the church office.  We will then give your name to the individuals who are in need of this ministry.

Summer Special Music Needed – See Cheryl Foster to sign up.

Our Choir starts rehearsals on September 3 and will sing in worship starting September 7.

The United Methodist Men – sponsored “Youth Nights,” which have been held on the first and third Saturdays of the month, will be taking the rest of the summer off and resuming on September 20.

The Joliet Cluster has a new project!  We will be supporting the Ridgewood United Community Pantry, an outreach ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church, located in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Joliet.    In August, we will be gathering pasta, pasta sauces, and large jars of mayonnaise.  Please place them in the blue bin in the narthex, and many thanks to you for your assistance.

VBS reunion and Rally Day on Sept. 7 2008 - Children will meet upstairs during Sunday School to sing their favorite Beach Party Songs.  Review the stories and meet our special guest Fitzwilliam.  A Hot Dog lunch with ice cream will be served afterwards.  Letters will be sent in August, with a RSVP request for the number of Hot dogs you can eat. NO LIMIT!

Attention All Men!  It is that time of year once again.  You are cordially invited to our Aurora District Prayer Breakfast on Saturday August 9th, at 8:00 am, hosted by Oswego Prairie UMC.  We will be led in Prayer and praise by Mr. Ken Timmons, Aurora Dist. Prayer Advocate.   See the flyer on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for more information.

Word of Thanks - Thanks for all the cards, phone calls and offers to bring food to us. Thanks to those that offered to do shopping or take me to the Doctor. Thank you all for your prayers. Linda
